Esports Program Feature: Plato High School

Stay Plugged In recently spoke with Elizabeth Wofford about the esports program at Plato High School, a small-town school with big competitive spirit located in Plato, Missouri. Plato High School currently competes in the Missouri Scholastic Esports Federation (MOSEF) in titles such as Overwatch, SSBU, Valorant, Rocket League, and Fortnite. MOSEF is a federation started by just nine educators that has now grown to over 100 schools representing over 2000 students. The team also participates in League of Legends.

The Plato esports program which is currently running in its 3rd year features many talented students who fulfill crucial roles across the program. Josh, a sophomore, shows his great leadership skills by taking on the role of team captain for the competitive Valorant team. Frankie, another talented player in the program, started off as a Community Manager, a role critical in keeping the community engaged with activities and tournaments. She currently sits as one of the top players on the program’s League of Legends team.

The program currently has 35 students ranging from middle school to high school students and boasts highly talented students that can pick up multiple games. Brandon, a sophomore, is particularly known for his ability to pick up any game and show great talent. Even more impressive, Brandon can pick up multiple roles making himself a very flexible player and able to fit the team’s needs wherever possible. A senior in the program, Joseph, also shows impressive talent by shining as a top player in both League of Legends and Overwatch.

Although Plato High School is a smaller school, Elizabeth Wofford tells us that does not stand in the way of them making big moves. They practice regularly and compete against larger schools in the area such as Ozark High and Francis Howell North. They play Valorant every Thursday in the MOSEF league and plan to make a big showing. When they aren’t competing, they are honing in on other skills in PR experience, videography, and creative writing through player interviews and casting which are run solely by the students.

The dedication of educators like Elizabeth Wofford has allowed students across over 100 Missouri schools to connect through esports. They are dedicated to offering access to free educational resources that include presentations from college programs for students looking to pursue esports at the collegiate level. The Plato esports program has several students looking to pursue collegiate esports including upperclassmen, Frankie and Joseph. Programs like Plato esports set up students for success by teaching them valuable skills and giving them the guidance and resources to make impactful educational and career choices.
